Pedasí: The Enchanting Coastal Town of the Azuero Peninsula

On the southeastern tip of the Azuero Peninsula, where Panamanian folklore beats strongest and the Pacific kisses pristine beaches, lies Pedasí. This charming coastal town in Los Santos province is one of those places that seems frozen in time: quiet streets, pastel-colored colonial houses, a church dominating the main square, and the feeling that life is meant to be savored unhurriedly.

Pedasí is the gateway to some of the most beautiful beaches and richest marine life of the Panamanian Pacific. Its privileged location makes it an ideal base for exploring the Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge, the surf breaks of Playa Venao, the region's mangroves, and the humpback whale season.

What to Do in Pedasí and Surroundings

  • Isla Iguana: The area's crown jewel. Just 8 kilometers off the coast, this wildlife refuge is home to one of Panama's whitest and finest sand beaches, surrounded by 40 hectares of coral reefs with over 200 fish species. Snorkeling, frigate bird watching, and boat trips are unmissable.
  • Humpback Whale Watching: Between July and October, hundreds of humpback whales migrate from both hemispheres to mate and give birth in these warm waters. Pedasí is one of the best places in the world to observe them. Tours depart directly from the town.
  • Playa Arenal and Playa Garita: Calm, expansive beaches perfect for swimming, walking, or simply relaxing under the sun. Ideal for families and those seeking to escape the crowds.
  • Playa Venao: Just a 20-minute drive away, this beach is Panama's surf mecca. Perfect for a day trip with surf lessons, beachfront lunch, and spectacular sunsets.
  • Sport Fishing: The waters off Pedasí are world-renowned for yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish, and marlin. Several operators offer half-day and full-day excursions.
  • Varela Rum Distillery: A family-run artisanal distillery producing one of Panama's most awarded rums. The visit includes a tasting and the chance to learn about the production process.
  • Sea Turtle Watching: Several nearby beaches are sea turtle nesting sites (July to November). Local organizations offer guided night tours to observe the nesting process.
  • The Town of Pedasí: Strolling through its quiet streets, visiting the San Pablo Church, sampling local cuisine at small restaurants and fondas, and buying handicrafts are simple pleasures that define the Pedasí experience.

Culture and Tradition

Pedasí is part of Panama's folkloric heartland. The Azuero region is the cradle of traditions such as the pollera dress, the mejorana guitar, and the tamborito dance. During the patron saint festivities honoring San Pablo (January) and Carnival celebrations, the town fills with music, dancing, processions, and contagious joy.

How to Get There

Pedasí is approximately 5 hours by road from Panama City. The route follows the Pan-American Highway to Divisa, then the Carretera Nacional south through Chitré and Las Tablas to Pedasí. Local flights are also available to Chitré Airport, from where the drive is approximately 1 hour.
