Key Characteristics of Las Tablas
- The Epicenter of Panamanian Carnival: Las Tablas is most famous for hosting what many consider to be the most authentic, vibrant, and wildest Carnaval celebration in Panama. It is defined by the intense rivalry between two factions of the town: Calle Arriba (Uptown) and Calle Abajo (Downtown). Each side competes with elaborate floats, stunning costumes, fireworks, and music. A unique feature is the water fights (culecos/mojaderas), where large water trucks spray the crowds to cool them off.
- Cradle of Panamanian Folklore: The town is closely associated with the pollera, the exquisite and intricate Panamanian national dress. Las Tablas hosts the annual Festival Nacional de la Pollera in July. It is also a key location for the country's folk music and dance.
- Notable Landmarks: The iconic Santa Librada Church on the main plaza is the center of the town’s religious life and its July festival.
