The Panamanian variety, especially that grown in the fertile lands of Chiriquí and Panamá Oeste, is known for its natural sweetness and low acidity. The fruit is a multiple fruit composed of many fused berries around a central core, with the characteristic crown of leaves at the top. In Panama, pineapple is consumed fresh, in natural juices, fruit salads, and as an ingredient in sweet-and-sour dishes. It is also a growing export crop.
