How to reach the summit from Boquete

Boquete is the most popular starting point for the journey to the summit. There are two main routes:

1. The night hike:

  • This is a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience. The round-trip hike is about 27 km and takes between 10 and 12 hours in total.
  • Most hikers set out around midnight to reach the summit just before sunrise — the perfect moment to see the sunrise and both oceans.
  • The trail is a wide, rocky gravel road. Although generally easy to follow, it is a constant, strenuous climb. A guide is recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with the terrain or hiking at night.

2. The 4x4 Jeep tour:

  • For a faster, more comfortable journey, guided 4x4 Jeep tours are a popular option.
  • Tours typically pick up guests at their hotels around 3:30 a.m. The bumpy but exciting drive up the steep, winding road takes about an hour.
  • The tour lets you reach the summit for sunrise without the strenuous night hike. Many also include a warm breakfast at the top — a perfect way to celebrate the achievement.
