El Valle de Antón
Coclé
Escape to a picture-perfect town nestled inside an extinct volcano crater. El Valle de Antón awaits with spring-like weather, hidden waterfalls, natural hot springs, butterfly sanctuaries, the iconic Sleeping Indian hike, and the one-of-a-kind square trees phenomenon. A mountain paradise just two hours from Panama City.
The Town Inside a Volcano
Imagine waking up inside a gigantic volcanic crater, surrounded by mist-covered mountains, crisp fresh air, and the sound of hidden waterfalls. That is exactly what awaits you in El Valle de Antón, one of Panama's most enchanting destinations. Located in the Coclé province, just two hours from Panama City, this picturesque town is the only permanent human settlement inside a volcano crater in the entire world.
The volcano that shaped it went extinct over 200,000 years ago, and in its place grew a paradise of perpetual spring-like weather. The cool mountain breeze is a balm after the tropical heat of the capital, and the lush vegetation turns every corner into a living postcard.
What to Do in El Valle de Antón
This destination is a true natural adventure playground. Some of the must-do experiences include:
- La India Dormida (The Sleeping Indian): The valley's most iconic hike. The mountain silhouette resembles a reclining woman, and the climb offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire crater. A moderate-difficulty trail, best started early in the day.
- Chorro El Macho Waterfall: An impressive 35-meter waterfall surrounded by tropical rainforest. Access includes a short trail, and there's also a zip-line circuit for the more adventurous.
- Hot Springs: The volcanic waters still provide natural thermal springs. Soaking in their garden-surrounded pools is the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking.
- Butterfly Haven (Mariposario): A charming sanctuary where hundreds of colorful butterflies fly freely. Perfect for families and nature lovers.
- El Níspero - Amphibian Conservation Center (EVACC): Here you can meet the famous Panamanian Golden Frog, a critically endangered national symbol.
- Square Trees: A unique botanical phenomenon. These trees have naturally square-section trunks and can be found on an easy trail within the town.
- Artisan Market: The Sunday market offers fresh fruits, regional vegetables, plants, flowers, and local crafts. A feast of colors and flavors.
- Cerro Gaital: For experienced hikers, this challenging trek ascends through cloud forest to one of the highest points on the crater rim.
