Silver Garden Spider

With its shiny, silvery body and elaborate circular web, the silver garden spider is one of the most striking spiders in Panama.

The silver garden spider (*Argiope argentata*) belongs to the orb-weaver spider family (Araneidae) and is widely distributed across Central and South America. Despite its imposing appearance, it is considered peaceful and harmless, posing no danger to humans.

Females reach a body length of 10 to 15 millimeters and are considerably larger than the males, which measure only 4 to 6 millimeters. Among its most striking features are its shiny silver body, legs with alternating black and light-colored bands, and a large orb web featuring characteristic white zigzag patterns. The spider waits motionless for its prey and then strikes with lightning speed.

Habitat

It prefers to live at forest edges, in clearings, in gardens, and in other sunny habitats with abundant vegetation.
