Jumping Spider

Salticidae spp.

Arachnid Year-round
Jumping Spider

The most intelligent spiders in the world. With their excellent vision, metallic colors, and a jumping ability 50 times their body length, jumping spiders stalk and hunt like tiny felines.

Jumping spiders (family Salticidae) have the best eyesight in the arachnid world. Their eight eyes, especially the two large front ones, provide binocular vision and exceptional depth perception. They can jump up to 50 times their body length thanks to a hydraulic system pressurizing their legs. Unlike other spiders, they actively hunt by stalking prey like miniature felines, without using webs. They display bright metallic colors—green, blue, red, and gold—and perform complex courtship dances. Panama hosts hundreds of jumping spider species in all its habitats.
