Golden Orb-weaver Spider

Nephila clavipes

Arachnid
Golden Orb-weaver Spider

The golden weaver of the jungle. Its enormous golden webs, measuring over 2 meters across, are strong enough to catch small birds and bats.

Nephila clavipes, the golden orb-weaver or tiger spider, is one of the most impressive arachnids of Panamanian forests. Females are gigantic: their body measures up to 5 cm and with legs extended reaches 15 cm. Males are tiny, barely 5 mm, and are often seen at the edges of the web. Its silk is a brilliant golden color visible in sunlight, and its webs can exceed 2 meters in diameter. The silk is so resistant it has been experimentally used to make clothing and bulletproof vests. It is harmless to humans, though its size is intimidating.
