Yellowfin Tuna
Thunnus albacares
The powerful marathon runner of the ocean. These large, streamlined tuna, with their characteristic yellow fins, cross the tropical waters in huge schools.
The yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is one of the world's most important food fish and an impressive athlete of the open ocean. It can reach 2.4 metres long and 200 kg, with speeds of up to 75 km/h.
These highly mobile predators migrate in huge schools through the tropical oceans, hunting sardines, mackerel and other schooling fish. Their characteristic sickle-shaped yellow fins and yellow lateral line are unmistakable.
In Panama they are found year-round off both coasts, especially in the deeper waters of Chiriquí, Veraguas and the Gulf of Panama.
