Green Basilisk
Basiliscus plumifrons
The "Jesus Christ lizard". This astonishing tree-dwelling lizard can run on its hind legs across the surface of the water — a skill that earned it its biblical nickname.
The green basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), also called the "Jesus Christ lizard", possesses one of the most remarkable abilities in the animal kingdom: it can sprint on its hind legs across the water's surface. Special skin flaps on its toes enlarge the surface area and create an air bubble that supports it — though only as long as it keeps its speed.
Males sport three striking crests: one on the head, one on the back and one on the tail. They are bright green with blue spots and can reach 80 cm long.
In Panama they are found along riverbanks and streams in the tropical rainforests, especially in Bocas del Toro and along the Canal. Early in the morning you can watch them basking on branches near the shore.
