Anole
Anolis
The little dragons of everyday life. These agile lizards, with their extendable throat fan, are found on practically every wall and tree in Panama. Their art of camouflage makes them perfect survivors.
Anoles (Anolis spp.) are one of the most species-rich lizard genera in the world, with dozens of species in Panama alone. Most are small — 10–20 cm — and have the ability to change colour between green and brown, similar to chameleons.
Their most striking feature is the colourful throat fan (dewlap) of the males, which they extend to mark territory and court. Each species has a characteristic pattern and colour scheme for this fan.
In Panama they are literally everywhere: on walls, trees, windowsills and garden fences, in cities and forests alike.
